November 30, 2009 - SCP Directors Sonia Fernandes and Sandra Henriques participated in the Newark iVolunteer-Night Patrol program which patrols the streets of Newark on Mondays and Fridays.
Mayor Cory Booker and Director Anthony Campos are leading this initiative. Volunteers drive around Newark in caravans led by off duty officers doing patrols of presence throughout the city. Each evening, approximately one hundred volunteers participate. So far they’ve had three special visitors at the night patrols: Comedienne Sarah Silverman, the Drum Orchestra to Newark’s Own Adelaide L. Sanford Charter School and Movie Star Billy Crudup. Here is a video of last week's patrol, with a special appearance by our own SCP Director, Sonia Fernandes.
The volunteers are broken up into approximately 4 teams, with five caravans in each team. Volunteers communicate with each other via walkie-talkies. Everyone is working together for a serious cause, but are also having fun in the mean time, including Newark trivia contests and jokes between teams. Only four more weekends to close out the year. Let us all keep up the pace and the good work we’ve all poured into this positive initiative.Night patrol volunteers meet at the Newark Fire Department Special Operations building at 191 Orange St. at 7:00 P.M.
